EngIl y a près de 15 ans, Thomas Hessler se familiarisait avec la musique techno. Aujourd’hui c’est elle qui régit sa vie. Issu de Berlin est, il fait partie de cette génération ultra prometteuse, repoussant les limites de la créativité.
Récemment signé sur Index Marcel Fengler, il semble que sa carrière soit à un carrefour décisif. Début octobre il jouera de nouveau au Berghain devant une poignée de chanceux qui pourront découvrir ou redécouvrir son univers. Oscillant entre techno brute et atmosphérique, Thomas se veut intègre.
Nous avons décidé de lui poser quelques questions concernant son passé, son futur et ses diverses collaborations.
Jusqu’à présent, il semble que 2014 soit une année fructueuse pour toi. Dirais-tu qu’elle est ta meilleure année ? Quels ont été tes meilleurs moments jusqu’ici ?
En effet jusqu’à maintenant, ça a été une belle année. C’était un vrai défi mais c’est ce qui me motive. Jouer pour l’ouverture au Berghain a vraiment été quelque chose de spécial. Voir le club vide en y jouant de l’electronica, les gens qui courent de part et d’autre pendant que je préparais tout avant l’ouverture des portes pour ensuite contribuer à l’ambiance de la nuit avec ma musique était différent pour moi mais génial.
Il y a aussi un autre moment que j’aimerais mentionner, quand Marcel et moi avons décidé que mon EP était prêt à l’écoute. C’était agréable de savoir que ce sur quoi j’avais tant travaillé était enfin prêt. Cet EP exprime ce à quoi j’aspire le plus en tant que musicien.
Comment ta collaboration avec Marcel est-elle née ? Travailler à ses côtés est-il source d’inspiration pour toi ?
C’est bien sur très inspirant et spécial lorsqu’un des artistes que tu respectes le plus ressent et comprend parfaitement ce que tu fais. Ce n’est pas toujours facile quand tu es totalement indépendant et que toi et tes potes essayez de laisser une trace. Ni lorsque tu dois faire quasiment toute ta promo et t’auto financer. Bien sur, je fais ce que j’aime le plus et ce sera toujours ainsi pour moi. Marcel m’a contacté il y a de ça quelques mois. Il s’intéressait à mes récentes productions et m’a expliqué qu’il souhaitait introduire plusieurs artistes à bord d’IMF. Il m’a donc demandé si j’étais intéressé. Je lui ai fait écouter quelques tracks sur lesquelles je travaillais à cette époque et il a beaucoup aimé. C’est ainsi qu’on a finalisé mon EP ‘Perception’.
C’est très agréable de travailler avec un artiste véritablement établi avec qui je peux partager mes idées et peaufiner mes techniques.
A en croire tes gigs passés et ton EP sur CLFT Militia, il semble que la France tienne une place particulière dans ton cœur… Constates-tu une vraie différence selon les publics ? Appréhendes-tu tes mixs différemment selon les villes où tu te rends ?
J’aime la France ! C’est en France que j’ai le plus joué ces deux dernières années. Le public y est sauvage, à la fois très jeune mais toujours réactif à de nouvelles idées et musiques électroniques. Je me dois pour cela de remercier mes amis de CLFT car ils ont été les premiers, avec Dave de chez Graphene à vraiment croire en moi. Les rencontrer et travailler à leurs côtés sera et a toujours été un vrai plaisir.
En tant que pianiste, penses-tu que la musique classique ait joué un quelconque rôle dans ton évolution ? Quels sont tes plus lointains souvenirs avec la techno ?
Oui bien sur. Lorsque tu as la chance de pratiquer la musique si jeune et pendant autant d’années cela t’es toujours très utile pour ta compréhension et ta perception musicale.
Je me souviens être sorti avec mes amis vers la fin des années 90. A cette époque, je faisais du hip-hop et des graffitis. Je n’avais absolument aucune idée de ce qu’était la musique techno, ni même sa culture. Jeff Mills jouait et ça m’a totalement renversé. L’énergie transportée par la musique, ces sentiments de rassemblement et d’union ont totalement changé ma vie.
Corrige moi si je me trompe mais Thomas Hessler est ton vrai nom n’est-ce-pas ? A t’il toujours été évident pour toi d’assimiler identité personnelle et musicale ?
Honnêtement, je ne me suis jamais vraiment posé la question. J’avais besoin d’un nom de scène donc j’ai choisi le mien instinctivement.
As-tu le sentiment que la musique techno t’apportera toujours plaisir et diversité ?
La techno, la musique électronique et leurs diversités joueront toujours un rôle capital dans ma vie. Mais je ne peux pas prédire jusqu’où cela me mènera.
As tu un rituel propice à la création ? Quel état d’esprit adoptes-tu en studio ?
Le moment que je préfère pour travailler sur de nouveaux projets est tôt le matin. Après avoir nourri mes chats et avalé un bon café. Hahaha, plus sérieusement, les premières heures du jour sont celles où j’ai l’esprit clair. S’en résultent mes idées les plus créatives.
Ce qui m’entoure, mes galères du passé et la musique que j’ai écouté pendant toutes ces années sont ma plus grande inspiration.
Tu sembles être quelqu’un de très organisé, as-tu également savamment planifié ta carrière?
Vraiment ? Je ne sais pas. La musique est quelque chose qui me fascine depuis que je suis très jeune et c’est tout ce que j’ai envie de faire. Je suis mes instincts naturellement, j’essaye de m’être fidèle et d’apprendre de mes erreurs du passé.
IMF03 m’apparaît comme un tournant dans ta carrière. Qu’attends-tu de toi même désormais ? Comptes-tu garder le même cap ?
« Perception » m’a donné plus de visibilité que mes précédentes productions. J’entends bien continuer ce que j’ai toujours fait. Essayer de trouver l’équilibre parfait entre de l’electronica expérimentale et de la musique pour animer les foules.
Une nouvelle release sur IMF est-elle prévue pour bientôt ?
Oui, IMF04 est à paraître bientôt. Une compilation qui rassemblera plusieurs artistes impliqués dans le label. Je contribue à hauteur d’un titre sur ce projet. Plus d’information à ce sujet seront dévoilées dans les semaines à venir.

About 15 years ago, Thomas Hessler familiarized himself to techno music. Nowadays, that’s what his life is all about. Born and raised in East Berlin, he’s now apart of a promising generation, always pushing away creativity’s limits. Recently signed on Index Marcel Fengler, it seems like his career has made a real turn. In early October he’ll play again at Berghain in front of a bunch of fortunate dancers, who can discover or rediscover his musical universe. Oscillating between raw and atmospheric techno, he aims to be honorable.
We decided to ask him a few questions regarding his past, future and his diverse collaborations.
Until now, it seems like 2014 is pleasing you, would you say it’s been your greatest year? Could you tell me about your favorite moments this year so far?
Yes it has been a great year so far. It was challenging but that is what drives me. Playing the opening at Berghain earlier this year was definitely something special. Seeing the club empty while playing some electronica, people running around finishing up the last few things before the door will open and then taking part in setting the mood for the night with my music was different but great.
Another moment I would like to mention was when Marcel and me decided that the EP was ready to be heard, it felt great to know something you been working on for so long is finally ready and shows in all ways what you are standing for as a Musician.
How was your collaboration with Marcel Fengler born? Is working along his side a new source of inspiration for you?
Marcel contacted me a few months ago showing interest in my recent works. He told me he wanted to take a few selected artists on board of IMF and asked if i would like to be a part of it. I showed him a few track ideas I was already working on and he liked them. So we started finalizing the « Perception EP ».
Of course it is inspirational and special when one of the artists you respect the most feels and understands what you are doing. It is not always easy when you are totally independent and try to leave a footprint with the few friends you are working with on music projects that you mostly have to promote and finance yourself.
I mean I do what I love the most and i will always do so but it is good to work with an more established artist, learn new ways of working and share ideas together.
Regarding your past gigs and your EP on CLFT , it looks like France has a special place in your heart… Do you really notice a difference between the crowds? Do you apprehend a gig differently depending on the hosting city?
I love France! Over the past two years I played the most gigs in France. The crowd is wild, really young but very open minded to new ideas and ways of electronic music. I have to thank my friends from CLFT for that because they have been the first guys who really believed in me. Meeting and working with them is and was always a great pleasure.
As a former pianist, do you think classical music has anyhow played its part in your artistic evolution? What are your earliest memories involving techno?
Yes for sure. When you have the chance to take lessons in such an early stage of your life over so many years it is always good for your musical understanding and hearing.
I remember my friends taking me out to a party in the late 90’s at that time I was doing hip hop music and graffiti and didn’t had any clue about techno music and its culture. Jeff Mills was playing and it totally blew me away. The energy of the music and this feeling of togetherness was something that changed my life.
Correct me if I’m wrong but Thomas Hessler is your real name, right? Has it always been obvious for you to assimilate your personal identity to your musical one?
I never really thought about that to be honest. I needed a name so yes I chose my real name.
Do you feel like techno music will always provide you diversity and pleasure?
Techno, Electronic music and its diversity will always play an important role in my life but I cant predict where this will lead me to one day.
What is your creation process? Which state of mind do you adopt in the studio?
The best time for me to work on new projects is early in the morning after feeding the cats and having a coffee.
Haha no seriously the first hours of the day I have a clear mind and as a result of that the most creative ideas.
Stuff that is happening around me, my struggles in the past and the music I listened to over the years are my biggest inspiration.
You seem to be a very organized person, have you wisely planned your career as well?
Do I? I don’t know. Music is the only thing that has been fascinating me since a very young age and it is all i wanna do. I follow my instincts naturally, try to keep it real and learn from the mistakes I made in the past.
IMF03 appear to me like a turn in your career. What are you expecting from yourself now? Will you stick to the same perspectives?
« Perception » got me more attention then the releases I had before but I will keep doing what I always did, trying to find the right balance between music for the floor and experimental electronica.
Any new release to be announced on IMF soon, maybe?
Yes, IMF04 is going to be released soon. A compilation that showcases some of the artists that are part of the label. I contributed one new track for that project. More information on that should be released in the following weeks.
